If you haven't ever cared for a newborn before, your baby's skin care can be intimidating. Taking care of your baby's skin is just one of the new things you need to think about as a new parent and it is easy to get bogged down with the feeling of needing to be a perfect parent. Thankfully taking care of your baby's skin is mostly just common sense. Babies don't need fancy or expensive products to keep their skin clear and clean. You don't need buy a bunch of products at all! Here are some helpful hints for new parents to use as they develop their baby's skin care routine.
Obviously you want to make sure that every part of your baby's skin that is not covered with clothing gets sunscreen applied to it–including his face and ears. Before going outdoors give your baby some added protection by dabbing some zinc oxide onto his (or her) ears and face. Don't forget that sunny days always require a hat or a bonnet! You can't be too cautious!
It should be your priority to protect your baby against the many skin conditions that can occur without proper care. Most of the time, rashes and bumps are easy to treat and are quite common. All you need to do is learn which way is best to treat what. You have to be on the lookout for any skin abnormalities, once you spot any, take the appropriate action that will keep your baby's skin in near perfect condition for years to come.
Newborn infants need products that are specifically created for them. It is not a good idea to assume that just because an older baby can use a product that it is safe for your newborn. Your newborn's skin is still figuring out how to function and deal with a world outside of mother's womb. The skin is super sensitive and easily irritated, unlike older babies' and toddler's skin which has had time to thicken up. Before you buy new products make sure that what you want to buy is newborn-friendly.
You also don't need to overdo it on the soap to make sure that your baby is clean. You only need a few drops of soap to clean your baby thoroughly. If you use too much you run the risk of drying out his skin and leaving him vulnerable to irritation. Never directly apply soap to your baby's skin. Instead squeeze the soap onto a washcloth and then lather up your baby's body and rinse it off quickly. Until you feel more comfortable with the bathing process lather up and rinse off individual parts of your baby. A slippery soapy baby can be scary to deal with! It is easy to get intimidated by baby skin care when you are a new parent. You might find yourself fighting the urge to bathe and clean the baby too often. The truth is that taking proper care of your baby's skin does not have to be difficult. It won't take you long to learn that keeping your baby clean and caring for her skin (or his skin) is little more than keeping the baby out of dirt and practicing some common sense. Don't worry-you will get the hang of it quickly!
