What is Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is an umbrella term which refers to two different kinds of treatment. The first is done in a clinic or cosmetic surgeon's practice, and uses large machines to blast crystals into the skin and pull them out again, removing the upper layers of dead skin. The second kind is designed for home use, and utilises a handheld wand device to remove the upper layers of dead skin.

Is Microdermabrasion a Good Idea?

There are both positive and negative aspects of both kinds of treatment and of microdermabrasion as a procedure. The first positive aspect of microdermabrasion is its relative speed. Professional microdermabrasion is commonly known as a "lunch hour peel" because of the fact that it can be done over a lunch hour, and you can go back to work immediately. Unlike some of the more severe treatments, it requires no downtime, and with the exception of a little pinkness and mild irritation, doesn't cause any major discomfort. In the case of home microdermabrasion, there is even less chance of discomfort, takes as long as you deem necessary, and can be done at home.
There are, however, negative aspects of microdermabrasion. Although the treatment is safe and relatively hassle-free, it can only really improve the appearance of skin which has only minor issues. For instance, if acne scarring was anything more than slightly minor, microdermabrasion could only go so far. Likewise with wrinkles; microdermabrasion could help to reduce light wrinkling, but deeper wrinkles could not be treated more than superficially. Whilst the customer might be satisfied by this when using the cheaper end of the home based treatments (which can get very expensive when sold by recognised brands) this might not be the case when only relatively minor results are seen after spending potentially hundreds at a clinic or salon.

Is There Another Option?

There is another option, which matches the affordability and convenience of small home microdermabrasion kits with an ability to take on more serious skin complaints, and produce dramatic results. The Scientia Derma Roller is a revolutionary device which, rather than refreshing the skin by taking off the upper layers, induces the skin to improve itself from within. By using the Scientia Derma Roller, you use a tried-and-tested technique called Micro needling. The barrel of the Derma Roller contains tiny microneedles on its surface. These needles are too small to cause damage, or bleeding (if used correctly), but stimulate the skin enough to trigger its natural healing process. This causes the skin to produce collagen and elastin, which reduces scars and wrinkles.

An Alternative to Microdermabrasion?

Collagen and elastin are required to keep the skin looking youthful and healthy. As skin begins to get older, or as it is scarred by injury, acne, stretch marks or other causes, there is often not enough collagen to maintain its youthful appearance. However, by using the Derma Roller, the skin is made to produce an excess of collagen and elastin. Essentially, by using the Derma Roller, you are tricking the skin into rejuvenating itself much more than it normally would – in effect, turning back time.
The best thing about the Derma Roller is that it can be done at home, on a regular basis. The system is also cost effective, and can equate to being as cheap as a few pennies per day.
